The skin, owing to the surface area it covers, is the most frequently traumatized organ of the body, not only by burns, but by a number of other injurious agents. Its replacement is therefore of outstanding importance from all standpoints. Skin substitutes and "synthetic skins" have been the aim of investigations and concern, primarily for those who devote themselves to the treatment of burns.^1-8
